How to bridge the gap between old and new?

Challenges

  • Redesigning an outdated investor relations platform into a more intuitive, modern tool — adding new features and improving usability from the ground up.

  • Build a responsive SaaS solution that works seamlessly across desktop, tablet, and mobile devices for better accessibility and performance.

  • Create a dynamic, extendable interface that scales easily, whether expanding data tables or displaying layered page details.

  • Design modular apps that function independently or as part of a larger system, enabling users to move smoothly between tools.

  • Develop a flexible design system to maintain visual and functional consistency across all components and product touchpoints.

  • Plan and supported the successful migration of all IR.Manager users to the new SaaS platform with minimal disruption.

The solution

Customer interviews

I spoke with a range of existing customers to better understand their needs and pain points. These early conversations gave us valuable insights into how different users—across roles, regions, and levels of experience—interact with the product. This diversity of perspectives helped shape a more inclusive and targeted design approach from the start.

Design sprint

I helped kick off the product design sprint to turn a fuzzy, ambiguous idea into a structured foundation. The sprint surfaced how customers naturally talk about the product, which helped us shape the product’s structure and define key sections. It also gave us an early sense of how pages might be organized, allowing us to build a rough prototype we could test and validate—helping us align on direction before investing too heavily in design decisions.

Prototyping

Following the sprint, I created an early-stage clickable prototype based on our initial insights and the core value areas identified by stakeholders. Testing it with 10 existing IR.Manager users gave me invaluable data — I was able to observe where users clicked, where they hesitated, and where they got lost. This helped highlight gaps in navigation, clarify content hierarchy, and validate our early assumptions before investing in high-fidelity design.

Findings

- The product had to work across multiple devices to suit the user accessing various forms throughout the week. (mainly the main table of investments)

- The data needed to be clear and easy to filter. (such as multiple nested investments).

- Ability to export reports.

- Clear contact detail pages with tagging and goal setting

- Agenda with investment events and details of attendees.

- Mail tool (like Mailchimp) for bespoke lists and content creation.

- Has to be quick and intuitive (main pain point with legacy system)oee

Next steps

  • Defined a responsive navigation system across desktop and mobile to ensure a seamless cross-device experience.

  • Prioritised core features based on direct user feedback, helping focus design efforts on what mattered most.

  • Created a style guide and set design principles, covering colour contrast, branding, typography, and grid systems to ensure consistency and accessibility.

  • Wireframed key features and mapped out how user flows would adapt across breakpoints, from desktop down to mobile.

  • Led regular design reviews, collaborating closely with the team and stakeholders to iterate quickly and stay aligned.

  • Applied atomic design methodology to streamline component creation and improve collaboration between design and frontend development.

Creating a new Investment ecosystem

App methodology

Each app functions as an independent module with standalone features, designed for flexibility and scalability. During development, we adopted a microservices architecture to support easy scaling and iteration of individual modules. This approach also gave Euronext clear visibility into which apps were released to different customers, while ensuring seamless communication between modules, delivering a cohesive, integrated user experience.

Cutting complexity

Made for all device types

As we focused on delivering an MVP, managing product complexity was key. We prioritised giving users access to the core features of IR.Manager on mobile and tablet, ensuring a streamlined and efficient experience across devices.

Key features included:

  • Viewing detailed investor profiles

  • Tracking ownership data

  • Reviewing meeting history

  • Adding and managing notes

This approach balanced essential functionality with usability, helping users stay productive on the go without overwhelming them.
